About 3D Graphics
Three-dimensional graphics (3D) is a quickly evolving field of computer graphics. It is present not only in advertisements and films but is also increasingly used in product, process and diagram visualization and in technical design. It provides unique means, impossible to obtain by traditional methods to show, for example, the merits of a product or an architectural project or simply to create a breathtaking graphic design.
3D graphics makes it possible to show a product or a project even before its realization. It is particularly beneficial during designing stages – it enables designers to find faults and make necessary modifications. The possibility to advertise a product that physically still doesn’t exist is a great opportunity for marketing specialists to show off their marketing skills.
3D graphics has also become a convenient and indispensable tool for artists providing them with means for a virtually unconstrained creation and enabling them to achieve photo-realistic results.
Thanks to the 3D graphics, we can not only create photo-realistic visualizations but we can also treat the 3D space as a stage, on which diagrams, animations or pictures can be presented in the real time. And, of course, the spectator can interactively handle elements of this space – the application range for this type of functionality is limited only by our imagination.
To make all this possible, a production process has to be implemented. Briefly, it involves the following steps:
- creating three-dimensional objects that are to appear in the visualization,
- animating them, giving them a “personality”,
- giving modeled surfaces proper attributes, often basing on appropriately modified photographs,
- setting virtual lighting and its characteristics,
- rendering – transforming 3D data into a flat picture that would create a convincing illusion of three-dimensionality. Even if the final product is to be a real-time virtual presentation, some elements must be rendered.
